THE CLIMATE

ÁrbolesThe climate in this area is oceanic, also known as humid moderate.

This is the climate in the north of the Iberian peninsula, i.e.  Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, North of Navarra and parts of the Aragonese and Catalonian Pyrenees.

One of its main features is high rainfall, with precipitation spread out throughout the year.

Precipitation is normally at its highest in winter and lowest in summer, the latter being caused by the northward shift of the Azores Anticyclon.

Rain falls softly, allowing it to seep into the soil.

Temperatures are mild and their range is small (less than 15 ºC), but there is a difference between the coast and inland areas.

The summer is cool and the winter moderate, although the diminishing influence of the sea means that winter temperatiures are lower inland.

Turning more specifically to the oceanic climate of the Cantabrian valleys, in which the area in the north of Navarra we are interested in is located, the climate is mild and humid for three main reasons: the proximity of the Bay of Biscay, its altitude near the sea and great exposure to rainfall. The main seasons tend to be as follows: Exterior de la Iglesia nevado

Spring does not usually arrive suddenly, but rather with alternating days of harsh and moderate weather.

There are cold snaps (days similar to winter) and hot periods (days similar to summer). This is one of the most moderate areas of Navarra in spring.

The summer is one of the mildest in Navarra, although high humidity can make it unpleasant.

Autumn bridges the gap between summer and winter.

The transition from summer to autumn is not a gradual process, but rather one of to and fros as in spring.

The change in temperature between summer and autumn is not as sharp as it is in the transition between other seasons.

In autumn, sunny, clear days, known as "veranillos" (Indian summers) alternate with rainy days as squalls resulting from polar fronts pass over.

Winter in this area is more moderate than in the rest of Navarra; night temperatures drop less and there are fewer ground frosts.

Winter is the wettest season, followed by spring and autumn, which are also very rainy.

Drizzle and minor squalls are present on many days throughout the year. Being one of the rainiest parts of Navarra, precipitation oscillates from about 1200 millimetres to 2500 millimetres.

As for temperatures, the annual temperature range is small and the annual average stands at 14ºC.
