IRON AND FORGEWORK CENTRE

The former convent of Our Lady of Sorrows hosts a tour through the history and the primitive ways of working iron. It is a reference of history and works that have marked in depth the ways of life and character of Lesaka. All along the route can also be seen from the book and exhibition of antique and craft of Peter Lanz.

In the same center is also located the Office of Information and Tourism of Lesaka.

IRON AND FORGEWORK CENTRE

Project number: 14673.

BACKGROUND:

For some years, the Council of Lesaka has been working to advertise its historical and cultural heritage. Iron and forgework, among other things, have proved fundamental to the development and progress of the town.

Thorughout history, the human race has used natural resources to improve its life. Stone, iron and wood have played a very important role in Lesaka's architecture and the building of numerous public amenities (fountains, streets, wash-houses, bridges, boundary stones, etc.) which are now significant tourist attractions.

PROJECT:

The Iron and Forgework Centre is intended as an exhibition and interpretation centre based on iron and forging. It aim is to highlight elements of vital importance to the history and progress of Lesaka.

The proposed Centre for the dissemination of Lesaka's historical and cultural heritage would be located in the Convent of the Carmelites, a site which is currently closed and unused, and which has ideal space for the proposed project.

The proposed Centre would consist of:

  • Exhibition area: a permanent area to exhibit the work of Pedro Lanz, master blacksmith. His wide range of work in iron, representing ways of life and livlihoods, could be exhibited to the delight of visitors and the local population.
  • Forging workshop: an area to show the tools used for years and which still work. Exhibition on Lesaka as a town whose way of life for years has been based on ironworks, blacksmiths, etc., where raw material is transformed.
  • Photo exhibition: an area to install a permanent exhibition of photos and written documents about the town's heritage; iron, wood, stone, elements which are increasingly evident as you approach the municipality. There is a paper medium called "LESAKA EZAGUTU" with which visitors can tour the town's historical centre, observing its heritage and enjoying its buildings.
  • Information and meeting point: a space through which to channel everything on offer in the town, to develop economic and tourist dynamisation, to attend visitors and provide all the existing information and future information supplied by experts.
