THE BIDASOA RAILWAY LINE 1916 - 1956

Information and pictures kindly provided by Ricardo Berodia Gordejuela, published in the 2007 Bulletin of the cultural group Luis de Uranzu

The industrial development which took place in Gipuzkoa and a great part of Europe in the XIX century did not overlook the mining complex of the Lower Bidasoa.

Such development was the result of railways, among other factors.

It was not long before the then-mining town of Irún adopted this modern form of transport (1889), which was soon converted into a passenger service (1916), extending the line to Elizondo, thereby providing the entire basin of the Bidasoa with an extremely useful public service which lasted until the end of 1956.
